# Airbnb temporary guest phone numbers: what to fix for door codes and texts

> Airbnb now gives many US and Canada bookings temporary phone numbers. What that breaks for door codes, quick replies, WhatsApp, and post-stay texts.

Question: Why can't I see my Airbnb guest's real phone number, and what happens to my phone-based door codes?

For eligible reservations in the US and Canada, Airbnb may give the guest and the host temporary phone numbers once a booking is confirmed. If you use software connected to Airbnb, it no longer receives guests' real numbers at all. Door codes, quick replies, and texts that rely on the guest's phone need a check.

## How temporary numbers work

The feature covers eligible homes reservations in the United States and Canada. That includes reservations run by hosts who use property management software connected to Airbnb.

- You and the guest can call or text (SMS) each other normally.
- WhatsApp is not supported on temporary numbers.
- Caller ID may show "Airbnb guest" or "Airbnb host."
- The numbers work from the booking date until 48 hours after checkout. They end right away if the reservation is canceled.
- After that, you can still reach the guest in Airbnb messages.

If a guest or host books from outside the US and Canada, no temporary number is assigned.

## What changes if you use connected software

Eligible reservations show a temporary guest number in your software. Airbnb says guests' real phone numbers are no longer shared with connected software in any country or region.

Some reservations get no number at all in your software. That includes reservations that aren't eligible, and reservations accepted before temporary numbers were available for connected software. You can still find the guest's phone number in the Airbnb app or on the website. Airbnb notes that your software provider may need to update how it handles reservations with no guest phone number.

## Door codes

Airbnb shows the last 4 digits of the guest's real phone number on the reservation details page, in the overflow menu, as a suggested door code. If you use software, Airbnb says to use that suggested door code instead of the last 4 digits of the guest phone from your software.

Our suggestion, not Airbnb's words: if a lock automation builds codes from the guest phone in your software, it may now get a temporary number's digits or nothing. Test it on your next few arrivals.

## Quick replies

The guest phone number shortcut in quick replies is gone. Airbnb says existing quick replies that use it will no longer be sent, and templates must be updated. It does not swap in the temporary number.

## Calling from a different phone

Airbnb connects a call or text by matching your phone number to the reservation. If you call from a phone that isn't linked to it, you may hear a prompt. Hosts can enter the phone number of any host or co-host, or the reservation confirmation code, followed by #. If you text, you may be asked for the confirmation code.

## Asking guests for their number

For reservations booked on or after Nov 20, 2026, Airbnb's policy says hosts generally may not ask guests for contact details such as a phone number, home address, or email during booking or the stay. The exceptions are a law, a documented HOA or building rule, or signing an allowed contract, and the host must disclose it in the requests section of the listing. If a guest shares a real number in an Airbnb message, it applies to that reservation only and is hidden 48 hours after checkout or cancellation.

## Worked example

A made-up host with 3 listings on connected software has five automations that touch the guest phone.

1. **Door code from the last 4 digits in the software.** Fix: use Airbnb's suggested door code from the reservation page, or a random code.
2. **Quick reply with the guest phone shortcut.** Fix: rewrite the template. Airbnb will not send the old one.
3. **WhatsApp welcome message.** Fix: send it in Airbnb messages. WhatsApp does not work on temporary numbers.
4. **Thank-you text 3 days after checkout.** The number expired 48 hours after checkout. Fix: send it within 48 hours, or use Airbnb messages.
5. **A guest who books from the UK.** No temporary number is assigned, and the software gets no phone. Fix: have a door code and message path that don't need a phone number.

After these changes, nothing in the guest flow depends on a phone number the host may not have.

## Steps

1. List every automation that uses the guest phone: door codes, texts, WhatsApp, quick replies, review asks.
2. Switch door codes to Airbnb's suggested code or a random code.
3. Rewrite any quick reply that used the guest phone shortcut.
4. Move WhatsApp messages into Airbnb messages.
5. Send any text before the number expires, 48 hours after checkout.
6. Ask your software provider how it handles bookings with no guest phone.
7. Before Nov 20, remove any request for a guest's number that isn't covered by an exception.
